Archive for November, 2010

Well, the start of spring was certainly interesting here in the Clare Valley with Mother Nature putting on an amazing display of force and fury during September.

The entire state of South Australia was battered by storms with across a 24 hour period from Friday 3rd to Saturday 4th of September. Our estate received over 95 mm of rainfall across that same weekend and the mighty Wakefield River burst her banks in some areas and flowed strongly through our little township of Auburn with the bridge that joins east and west Auburn closed to all traffic. Justin Taylor, our USA Market Manager had once promised to ‘boogie board’ down the river next time it flowed but surprisingly, he didn’t show.

In the vineyard, the team were kept very busy managing the water flow into the dams and ensuring the vines suffered no ill effects from the storms.

Throughout October we continued to receive good falls and that, along with intermittent days of glorious spring sunshine has set the vines up with first-rate healthy growth. The estate dams are the fullest I have ever seen them and this means we have good stores of precious water as we head into the drier summer months.

Environmental Awards

Over the last few weeks we have been proud to receive a couple of awards not directly associated with our wines, rather the work that we have done (and continue to do) on the environmental front.

In mid-October our very own Environmental Ambassador, Clinton Taylor proudly accepted the award for Leading in Sustainability – Setting the Standard for Small to Medium Businesses at the 2010 Banksia Environmental Awards. The Banksia Environmental awards are recognised as Australia’s pre-eminent environmental awards and acknowledge those who demonstrate excellence, dedication and leadership in building a sustainable future.
Then, only a couple of weeks later, we were again recognized for our innovative environmental practices, winning the NAB Agribusiness National Award for Environmental and Energy Management. The Agribusiness Awards for Excellence is run by Monash University and National Australia Bank Agribusiness and is the most highly regarded awards program within the food, beverage and agribusiness sector of Australia. The awards which recognize excellence, innovation and leadership commended Taylors’ progress in building a holistic green business model. Our fellow category finalists were industry heavyweight Treasury Wine Estates along with Longwarry Food Park, Mackay Sugar and Warrnambool Cheese and Butter.
